Reading Guide

When you read...

1. Determine unfamiliar words. You don't need to know the meaning of every word that is unfamiliar. Just read through the text first.
2. Analyze word structure. Unlock word meanings using prefixes (un-, in-), suffixes (-er, -hood, -ist), and roots of the words you want to find out the meanings. Sometimes the meanings of the words are right after the words themselves or some where in the same paragraph.
3. Determine topic of a paragraph- what the text in the paragraph is about.
4. Identify the main idea sentence and supporting details of a paragraph.
5. Sometimes recognizing the author's writing pattern does help.
6. Apply all the skills and techniques in your reading.
